P/C Bill and Anne George graciously opened their lovely, expansive home to the DEYC members and guests on Saturday April 21 from 5:30-7:30 for the final “winter gathering”. Many guests accepted the insistent offer to linger beyond the posted time.
A very ample table displayed a bountiful array of hot and cold delicacies that were eagerly tasted and enjoyed by all 40 plus attendees. Among the group were several P/Cs, current officers, past and current directors and a few potential new members.
Conversations were lively as members and guests discussed the mild winter, excitement about the early spring and hopefully early boating season, happy reunions between snowbirds and northerners, welcomes to potential members and the wonderful and exhilarating cruise though the Panama Canal.
A group of joke tellers enjoyed sharing self-deprecating tales about marriage, family vacations, spouses and other glorified tales. Stories regarding the Panama Cruise recounted how certain gregarious members became well known among the crew members and other guests aboard ship. Thanks to all who shared in spreading our popular “fun group” attitude of the DEYC.
Commodore Amy Goodwin thanked our hosts for their generosity and then appealed to the group to take advantage of the many DEYC events that are planned for the summer. All are encouraged to attend the first big event, the Commodore’s Dinner on May 12, at Fisherman’s Wharf in Boothbay Harbor. Cash bar opens at 5:30PM, dinner at 6:30PM. The evening will include announcements, dinner, dance music by Dave Gagne and of course socializing with members and guests.
The dinner is the first of many fun and exciting events including, launching party, Reggae cruise, the annual cruise, poker run, BBQ, mini cruise, picnic, annual meeting and hauling out party. Details can be found on the DEYC web page.
Thanks to Jane Williams for organizing the winter-gatherings that have become a favorite activity for our members.

DEYC Florida Winter Gatherings 2011/2012

This was our first year for monthly gatherings in sunny Florida. The response was enthusiastic and all 5 gatherings were well attended. The season kicked off in November at Geoff and Shirley Geoffrion’s home in Venice. Members came from far and wide and a boisterous good time was had by all. This was followed in December at Jack and Sarah Davis’s home in Venice where we celebrated the holiday spirit in a spirited way. We gathered again in January at John and Pat Ridlon’s home also in Venice and toasted the large alligator in the lake out back. On March 6th we combined our gathering with a kick-off party for the Panama cruise group and met at the new Maxine Barrett Park Pavillion near Sharky’s in Venice. It was a gorgeous sunny day with a light on- shore breeze from the gulf and a great Bon Voyage party. Last but not least we met for our last gathering on April 12th at Allan and Joyce Ivester’s lovely condo in Punta Gorda overlooking the Burnt Store Marina. Both sun and gentle breeze flooded in through their porch upon a smaller crowd already talking about Maine and our boats and the summer cruise. The gatherings were a definite success and plans are underway for next season.
P/C Shirley Geoffrion
Of course, this cruise wouldn’t be complete without the DEYC group organizing some very special nights of partying. The Island Princess was entertained by the DEYC Pirates. What a sight to see and lots of fun throughout the night. Even though the Queen of England has banned “those fascinators”, the DEYC group had another wonderful evening displaying their unusual and colorful fascinators. Allan Ivester continued to fascinate our group with his “tall tale” and Irish songs.
This year’s DEYC Cruise Ship Party consisted of 50 members and guests. Princess gave us a generous cocktail party as well as bottles of wine, ship photo, Princess bags, and a $100 credit for those who served their country. The DEYC group also “earned” $4,478.31 which was given back to all 50 members and guests. As usual, the DEYC group had 10 fun-filled days. Special thanks to organizers Linda, Paula & Anne.
Look for more news and pictures of the cruise on the DEYC Website.
Down East Yacht Club News

The Annual DEYC Winter Gathering was held on March 6th overlooking the beautiful waters of the Gulf of Mexico, on Venice Beach, Venice, Florida. Over 30 DEYC members attended this fun-filled event.
The following day 23 members and guests journeyed to Ft. Lauderdale and stayed at the new Hyatt. Later in the evening the group had a lovely dinner at the Islamorada Fish & Co. Restaurant.
The next day all fifty DEYC members and guests met at Port Everglades and boarded the Island Princess. This 965’ cruise ship, owned by Princess Cruise Line, had 1,970 passengers aboard for the 10 day cruise to the Panama Canal.
During our journey to the canal we had two fun-filled days at sea, then a stop in Aruba to snorkel and explore the beaches. On Monday our ship was in Cartagena, Columbia which is a beautiful historic city. The next day most of us were up at 6:00 A.M. to watch our ship go through the locks. The DEYC group then took a 7 hour trip, in a smaller boat built in Boothbay Harbor, through the other set of locks on the Pacific side.
It was certainly a fascinating day and what an amazing sight. We even saw where the new Panama expansion is being built which is to be completed in 2014.
After leaving Colon our ship sailed on to Costa Rica where our group had a special tour set up by AAA to see the lush tropical rain forest and we also motored by boat through the Canals and watched all the wildlife which was plentiful on that particular day. And, of course, as a typical DEYC boater, we ended up assisting another boater who had engine problems!
We had several more days of cruising and then our last stop was the Cayman Islands where we all took advantage of the shopping and the various water sports.
Of course, this cruise wouldn’t be complete without the DEYC group organizing some very special nights of partying. The Island Princess was entertained by the DEYC Pirates. What a sight to see and lots of fun throughout the night. Even th

Down East Yacht Club
By Alice Thompson

Saint Patty’s Day was the next to last DEYC “Winter Gathering” here in the North. It was hosted by PC Bob McCarthy’s and wife Carole and was held at their beautiful waters edge home on Southport Island. With many other St. Patrick’s Day functions in the area there were still about 35 in attendance. As the evening progressed we were witness to the most gorgeous sunset which over time displayed many hues of fire engine red. The large farmhouse table donned a spread of delicious hors d’oeuvres accompanied by lively conversation. Little did we know that the temps the following week would equal those of Florida.

The last “Winter Gathering” here in the North will be held April 25th at the home of PC Bill and Anne George, Brunswick. 207-729-5069. We look forward to seeing you there. Once again we thank “Skip” & Jane Williams for scheduling these “Winter Gatherings” in the North!

For those Snowbirds who have not flown North there will be an additional “Winter Gathering “ in the South held April 12th at the home of Allen and Joyce Ivester, Punta Gorda., Fl. 941-575-0218. We thank PC Shirley Geoffrion who has scheduled “Winter Gatherings” in Florida.

Coming up we will hear about the DEYC Cruise to Panama along with more reports on the Winter Gatherings in Florida.

Don’t forget to sign up for the “Commodores Dinner”, May 12th at Fisherman’s Wharf hosted by Commodore Amy and Dusty Goodwin.
