Hello all you DEYCers with dogs. How about a thread that describes overnight anchorages that are great for dogs that need to get off the boat??? We always look for places where the dog can run off-leash, but isn't likely to run off.

I've got a few:

Belfast - now has fenced dog park not far from the waterfront. About a mile - up Main St and left on Lincolnville Ave.

Poorhouse Cove (John's Bay) - On N shore there is a great non-muddy beach with a 20 acre field behind it. Farmhouse is over the hill and out of sight. An added benefit is that there is a Bald Eagle nesting pair in the vicinity.

Smith Cove (Castine) far SE anchorage off deserted beach. Also has a few storm moorings that are often available.

Basin Island, in The Basin. A little muddy at lower tides.

Dix Island Harbor, Hells Half Acre, McGlathery (and most of Merchant's Row), Maple Juice Cove next to the Duffy's, but we already know about them.

AD WHAT YOU KNOW!!!

Down East Yacht Club
By Carol Saunders

Not even a nor’easter could keep the "Down Easters" from attending our second "Winter Gathering" which took place Saturday, November 14. Members navigated their way to the lovely home of RC Amy and Dusty Goodwin at Farnham’s Point.

The board members who arrived earlier for a meeting thought the members attending the gathering would be few due to the weather. Wrong! About 70 to 80 members surprised us. They braved the wind and rain to arrive laden with a tasty variety of hors d’oeuvres. Let the munching begin!

Everyone was so happy to see one another. Groups gathered with great conversations and lots of laughter erupting. We spent some time saying our good-byes to the snowbirds (like PC Bob Wheeler and Paula who were leaving the next day for the warm sunny south). The rest of us will brave another New England winter.

We had seven past commodores attending -- Senior PC Edgar Reed, PC Cy Seifert, PC Bob McCarthy, PC Bob Wheeler, PC George Masters, PC Bill George, and PC Joe Blake and last but certainly not least, our present Commodore "Sandy" Young.

Lots of talk about our upcoming Christmas party hosted by PC Bill and Anne George taking place on Friday, December 4, 1800 hours at the Taste of Maine. Check out the particulars, menu, etc. on our Web site, www.downeastyachtclub.com. See you there!

Down east yacht Club

Winter Get-together

By Carol Saunders

I can’t say "Hooray" to winter but I can say "Hooray" to get-togethers. Members of the DEYC had their first winter get together at the charming home of Vic and Joan Taylor. They live in the big white house on Chimes Lane. (It should be called Charming Lane.) What a wonderful period house with lovely rooms, beautiful staircase, and a great view looking out at the Townsend Gut through the large beveled window in the front door.. They had a fire in the fireplace so we could warm our bones from the early October chill.

As usual, members arrived bringing an amazing selection of hors d’oeuvres which quickly filled the dining room table. This prompted use of more tables in the kitchen to accommodate all. The progression of the evening brought on interesting conversation and much laughter.

It was nice to see new members and always special to have large number of Past Commodores among us. Those in attendance were: PC Edgar Reed, PC Cy Seifert, PC Bob Marshall, PC Bob McCarthy, and PC Bob Wheeler. You know a gathering is a success when all leave with smiles on their faces and very fond memories.

The next gathering will be at the home of RC Amy and Dusty Goodwin on Saturday, November 14th at Schooner Lane, Farnhams’ Point.
Down east yacht Club
By Carol Saunders
Columnist

Down East Yacht Club holds hauling out party
The Down East Yacht Club held its last hurrah for the 2009 summer season. At 1500 hours more than 200 members gathered to enjoy the hauling out party held at Blake’s Boat Yard. We were treated to liquid refreshments, wonderful hors d’oeuvres and stimulating company; kudos to all involved in the preparation for such a great party. Thanks go to our new commodore, "Sandy" Young and his lovely wife, Karen, the Blake family, Coastal Catering, and the Woody Wagon volunteers. Also many thanks go to RC Amy Goodwin for providing a very attractive Ships Store.

The members mingled while they ate, ate and ate some more. The talk was the opposite of the launch party where the discussion was who had already launched and when others were launching. The haul out party has a bittersweet mood to it. Everyone is saddened to see the summer boating season come to an end, but, on a positive note, the board met Saturday noon and all the activities, even "The Cruise" plans for next year, are well underway.

Members departed at 1700 hours with a full and happy feeling ready to enjoy the remainder of the evening.

We will start our "Winter Get Togethers" on October 17 at the home of Vic and Joan Taylor on Chimes Lane. See you there!

Be sure to visit our Web site with bulletin board at downeastyachtclub.com.

General Board - On-board Diesel Fuel cleaner

Cleaning Diesel Fuel – One Approach
Many of us have had occasional diesel fuel problems. I installed an on-board diesel fuel cleaner that may be of interest to other members . Full details, photos and a diagram are available by emailing me at rrichard99@yahoo.com. Neither the document nor the photos are included here due to bulletin board space limits(the diagram PolishDiagram.jpg is attached though). However, this is how it begins...

Ever had your diesel slowly lose rpm and then die at the worst possible time? Seem like you ran out of fuel but your tanks were at least a third full. It happened with “Wild Flower”, our 28’ O’Day sailboat, twice during somewhat rough crossings of Muscongus Bay in mid-coast Maine. Cause? - a clogged fuel filter due to algae/glop in the fuel. We all know that diesels are very sensitive to needing clean fuel and when rough seas stir up the tanks - bad things can happen! Even though we treat the tank with biocide at lay up, this can still occur. I decided I would not risk the family again and built an on-board fuel polishing system to keep the fuel clean. Here’s how it was done...

The typical fuel arrangement consists of the fuel being sucked out of the tank by the engine fuel pump through the tank shut off valve, then to an external fuel filter (primary) and finally to the engine mounted filter (secondary). What we did was add a shunt to pump fuel directly from the tank through a separate filter and then back to the tank so that the fuel could be continuously recirculated through the new filter to clean it. The additional filter, pump, valves, etc. were mounted on a panel in the port lazarette (Fig 1) so that everything could be operated from the cockpit (Fig 2).
(email me if interested in the full document - Ron)
Has anyone tried using a 240 volt heating element in a 120 volt water heater? The idea is to greatly reduce the current draw so that the heater can be run for a short while on the inverter and battery without necessarily running the main engine. Only a small temperature rise is needed, just enough to take the chill off the shower in the morning.

Thanks,

Dennis and Toni
